DISPLAY SCREEN AUDITS
On the 31st December 1992 a new set of regulations concerning the use of visual display units
(VDU's) came into force. These regulations apply to anyone who is defined as a VDU 'user'.
Within the regulations a user is defined as anyone habitually using a VDU as a significant part
of their normal work. The regulations set out a series of duties which will be placed upon the employer.
Principally they are as follows:
- Analyse VDU workstations and take steps to remedy any risks found.
- Assess the risks to the operator's health from the use of the workstation, and record this assessment.
- Ensure that all new workstations meet the requirements of the regulations.
- Ensure that all existing workstations meet these requirements by 31st December 1996.
- Train 'users' in VDU use and recognition.
- Provide 'users' with appropriate rest breaks.
- Entitles 'users' to eye and eyesight tests where appropriate.
It is the duty of the employer to produce an assessment of VDU use. Such a process can
be time consuming and may require specialist ergonomic advice.
