Manual handling of boxesOn the 31st December 1992 the Manual Handling Operations Regulations came into force. These regulations apply to any task which involves moving a load manually, and sets out a series of duties which are placed on the employer and employee. Principally they are as follows.

  • Avoid as far as possible, the need for manual handling operations which involve the potential for risk of injury.
  • Mechanise any tasks to prevent manual handling.
  • Assess any hazardous manual handling operations which cannot be avoided. The assessment should include consideration of four main areas; Task, load, individual and environment.
  • Reduce the risk of injury resulting from manual handling as far as possible.
  • Inform and train employees with regard to the risks involved in manual handling operations

  • Brief overview of the Health & Safety at Work Act.
  • Brief overview of Manual Handling Regulations.
  • Types and frequency and cost of manual handling injuries.
  • Anatomy of the back.
  • Physical principles of manual handling (principle of levers).
  • Risk assessment applied to manual handling.
  • Control measures in manual handling.
  • Principles of kinetics.
  • Practical demonstration of manual handling.

Objectives:

  • Explain what is meant by manual handling.
  • Explain how manual handling can cause injury.
  • State the principles for controlling manual handling in a practical context.
  • Have a general knowledge of the risk assessment process.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the Manual Handling Regulations.

Cost: £25 per person + VAT on open courses

£25 per person + VAT (min charge of £200 + VAT) for in-house courses

Courses can be run in house or at our training centres in Lincoln and Grimsby.  We also run open courses regularly for individuals or businesses needing to train single employees.
